2024 CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
Below, you'll find the tentative schedule for 2024 street maintenance and improvement projects in Kentwood. We aim to have summer resurfacing and routine maintenance completed by the end of October. During the road construction season, we appreciate the partnership of residents and businesses as we work to maintain and improve this important infrastructure.
Julivan Avenue and Ridgewood Street Reconstruction
- Estimated timeline: March-September*
- Project description: Full reconstruction that will include new concrete curb, gutter, driveway approaches and sidewalks, asphalt pavement surface on the roadway, storm sewer installation, water main installation and sanitary sewer installation.
- Traffic impact: Julivan Avenue and Ridgewood Street will remain open throughout construction to residents on those streets and their guests. At times, access to properties may be from a single direction on a one-way gravel lane. Temporary driveway material will be placed and maintained to ensure access to homes. There will be times during the project when driveways will be inaccessible and residents will need to park on the street. Construction companies will notify residents directly of these events. Emergency services will always have access to properties.
- Water service: There will be times for up to four hours that properties will be without water while the contractor completes work. Residents will be notified a minimum of 24 hours before any water shutoff.
- Property owners affected by this project were notified by letter and a public information meeting was held February 28, 2024 at City Hall. Mail delivery and trash pickup will not be disrupted.

40th Street SE Reconstruction from Patterson Avenue to Soundtech Court
- Estimated timeline: April-June
- Project description: Crush and shape asphalt pavement and the addition of a turn signal at the 40th Street and Patterson Avenue intersection.
- Traffic impact: Throughout the project, local traffic will be maintained. Community members will need to follow a posted detour using 36th Street and East Paris and Patterson avenues.
- Estimated timeline: July-October
- Project description: Mill and repave new asphalt pavement.
- Traffic impact: Throughout the project, northbound and southbound traffic will be maintained but will be limited to one lane in both directions. Community members headed westbound using Burton Street will need to follow posted a detour using Lake Drive and East Beltline. Community members headed eastbound using 28th Street will need to follow a posted detour on 29th Street and Aquest Avenue.
- Water service
The 2024 sidewalk repair program will take place starting in June and be completed by Cole Concrete, LLC. More information about the program can be found here.

Message boards on major streets will give drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists advance notice of when closures will begin.

52nd Street from Breton Avenue to Kalamazoo Avenue
- A full reconstruction that included a new water main on the north side of 52nd Street, new asphalt pavement surface on the roadway and a new traffic signal at the intersection of 52nd Street and Stauffer Avenue.
Meadowlane Drive
- Full reconstruction that included a new concrete curb and gutter, new concrete sidewalks and concrete driveway approaches, asphalt pavement surface on the roadway, storm sewer installation, water main installation and sanitary sewer installation.
Neighborhood Cape Seal Treatments
Several neighborhoods received a cape seal, which is designed to create a smooth surface with increased durability. Cape seal projects take two non-consecutive days on each segment of road. Patching and crack sealing work took place in advance to prepare the road for this treatment.
Information Regarding Private Utility Work
Private utility companies including AT&T of Michigan and Metronet may be seen completing work in or around your neighborhood. This work may include upgrades and repairs to each company’s systems to better serve the community.
Scheduled work hours are 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. However, some hours may be restricted due to traffic volumes. For questions about this or other work in public rights-of-way, contact the Kentwood Engineering Department at 616.554.0737.

PASER CONDITIONS MAP
The City of Kentwood maintains one of the highest-rated major street networks in Kent County according to hard data compiled by the Grand Valley Metro Council, which is based on PASER ratings.
The PASER scale is a 1-10 rating system for road pavement condition developed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Transportation Information Center. PASER uses visual inspection to evaluate pavement surface conditions. PASER ratings provide a basis for comparing the quality of roadway segments. You can view an interactive map showing Kentwood’s PASER ratings year by year here.
The Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council, or TAMC, is another resource for independent, objective data on the condition of Michigan's roads and bridges and a resource for implementing the concepts of Asset Management. TAMC’s interactive maps can be found here.
